Rome is the third book of Julia Budenz’s long poem in five books. As she described it, “The third garden is that of the true, specifically of academic knowledge, of scholarship, of learning. Its book . . . uses material from Roman literature, history, and topography.”

Begun in the 1980s, this is the book that took Budenz the longest to write. She suspended work on it for several years in the late 1990s, convinced that she should learn Italian before she could go further. Two sections from Book Three were published by Pivot Press in 2005 under the title Carmina Carmentis. She perfected some of Book Three’s last few pages just before she died in December 2010.

Format 6 by 9 inches, softbound, with 722 pages. ISBN 978-0-9849089-3-6.
